Hainian Yu is a Chinese-Australian Baritone who loves to share the joy of music with those around him. Since graduating with a Bachelor of Music (Honours)/Science from the University of Queensland in 2020, he has performed in a range of solo and ensemble settings, with forthcoming engagements including Bass soloist in Graun's Der Tod Jesu (Lucem Vitae) as well as Handel's Messiah (Yeppoon Choral Society).
Additionally, he and his wife Naomi are founding directors of the Lucem Vitae ensemble, with whom they enjoy performing sacred music and engaging regional communities through workshops and performances which aim to make singing and music accessible to all. Similarly, in his teaching, Hainian seeks to nurture each student's voice and love of music through a positive and encouraging approach.
Outside of music performance and teaching, Hainian is a final-year medical student who is passionate about empathetic, patient-centred care, as well as teaching fundamental biomedical sciences to undergraduate students as an anatomy/physiology demonstrator. In his spare time, he enjoys table tennis, board games and movies with his wife and family.
Notable past performances include Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra), Dr Falke (Sound Thinking Opera - Die Fledermaus), bass soloist in Saint-Saëns' Christmas Oratorio, Stainer's Crucifixion and Charpentier's Midnight Mass (Lucem Vitae), soloist in SunPAC’s “Golden Days” and “Rare Voices” concerts, quartet member at the Brisbane City Council’s Lord Mayor’s Seniors Christmas Parties (Seren8), and chorus member in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Symphony no. 9 and Mozart’s Requiem (Brisbane Chamber Choir/QSO).
Naomi Yu is an engaging, dynamic soprano passionate about sharing her love of beautiful music. Having graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Music (first class honours, University medal) in 2020, she performs regularly with several different ensembles as soloist and ensemble member. Upcoming solo performances include Der Tod Jesu by Graun (Lucem Vitae) and Handel's Messiah (Yeppoon Choral Society).
A founding member of vocal quartet Seren8 and ensemble Lucem Vitae, Naomi has always maintained a strong belief in the power of collaborative music-making to change lives positively. She enjoys engaging with regional and rural communities with her husband Hainian and nurturing a love of music and sense of belonging.
Outside of music, Naomi is a recently-graduated midwife passionate about providing woman-centred care. She also has over 7 years of childcare experience caring for and educating children in the context of music teaching, day-care, and babysitting. She enjoys reading historical fiction, going for long bushwalks, and spending time with family.
More recently, performance highlights have included Saint Saëns's Christmas Oratorio (Lucem Vitae), Acis and Galatea as Damon (Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra), and The Lord Mayor's Seniors Christmas Parties for the sixth year in a row. Naomi performed in the Australian premiere performance of Dona Nobis Pacem (by RV Williams) as soprano soloist, with the UQ Chorale and Queensland Youth Orchestra in her first year of study. She has performed as soloist such works as Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G minor, Bach’s Ascension Oratorio, Bach’s Wachet Auf, Vivaldi’s Gloria, and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. Naomi recently won second prize in the Australian Vocal and Concerto Competition in 2024, first prize in the Ethel Osbourne competition in 2019 and was a finalist in 2018 and 2017. She won first prize in the Vocal Aria section in the Redlands Eistedfodd in 2018.
