What we teach
Singing
Whether you are someone who has sung all your life, or whether you are looking to explore something totally new, we are passionate believers in the fact that everyone can sing! In fact, we love helping new students to discover this, alongside all of the many benefits that singing can bring (self-expression, relaxation, friendship, confidence, community and connection just to name a few). At the same time, we are also passionate about working with more experienced singers in honing skills/preparing for exams, auditions and performances.
For all students, we have a big focus on the core foundations of singing technique, such as breathing, posture and vowels. As classical singers, we know that these fundamentals are so important in discovering and maintaining the beauty, resonance, versatility and longevity of every singer's voice, no matter what style of music you may be interested in singing. Meanwhile, we also love helping new and seasoned singers alike to grow in their musicianship and musicality through working together on thoughtful choices of repertoire that is guided by your interests and tastes.
Through this, it is our goal to empower our students with an increasing love of music, and a positive relationship with it which they can carry with them for life.
Music theory
In the course of learning singing, we inevitably encounter aspects of music theory which help not only with our ability to learn music (including by sight-singing), but also help us to have a richer experience of our music. This can include understandings of scale degrees, intervals, chords, keys and form and function. Our background in teaching via the Kodaly method, including use of moveable-do solfege such as (do, re, mi etc.) and our musicological and theoretical training from university provide us with a wealth of experience in providing relevant training in musicianship.
On the other hand, for those who may be interesting in learning music theory in its own right, for academic purposes, to assist with learning other instruments or for AMEB or other theory exams, we are also well equipped provide tuition and guidance in a way that is relevant, engaging and practical. Ultimately, we love music theory because it helps us to be able to understand, describe, communicate about music, and we are always excited about sharing this with students!
Introduction to music - for kids aged 10 and under
Our introduction to music class is inspired by three years of regular weekly/fortnightly classes which we taught to a small group of three children, who began with us aged 5, 5 and 3 respectively and are now 8, 8 and 6. Incorporating a range of rounds, folk songs and musical numbers as well as actions and games, these sessions were not so much focused on vocal coaching as they were on singing for friendship and nurturing the love of music (with a little bit of Kodaly musicianship thrown in). Having both grown up with music in our lives before we decided to become musicians, we are incredibly passionate about helping young children to experience music, and seek to provide an accessible introduction through this class. This class is available as an individual class, or as a group class of up to four children.
